Congratulations to Our Newest Red Apple Hospitals!

We are celebrating the addition of four more Red Apple hospitals across North Carolina! Congratulations to these four hospitals for the hard work and commitment they put into providing delicious, affordable and healthy food on a daily basis for visitors and staff. Our newest Red Apple Awards go to Catawba Valley Hospital, Broughton Hospital, FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital, and Ashe Memorial Hospital. Keep reading to see how they did it!

 

Catawba Valley Hospital posts the weekly menu on the hospital intranet and identifies healthier foods using a red apple icon. Nutrition Information is available at the point of selection so that the customers can see calories, sodium, and fat content of various foods. Their wellness team plans to launch their new red apple status at an event in mid-June and promote several new healthy items in their cafeteria. “I am proud to work at an organization which promotes a healthier foodservice environment,” says Martha Green, Director of Nutrition Care. “If we can encourage customers to make healthier choices and be aware of the sodium content in foods, just think of how this could impact the awareness and choices for someone who may have high blood pressure.”

 

Broughton Hospital earned their new Red Apple Award by focusing on key changes over the past several months. In addition to offering a daily special that features delicious and healthy entrées, visitor and employees see nutrition information on menus, get a discount for choosing no-calorie beverages, and are treated to new heart healthy entrees.  

 

 

The newly remodeled cafeteria at First Health Richmond Memorial Hospital offers several fresh and healthy items that areidentified by a “Fit” icon. Visitors and staff now have access to a salad bar that features greater variety including dark greens and fat-free salad dressing. As a key leader on Richmond’s wellness team, Deb Olivero understands how the Red Apple Award impacts health in the community. “We love being able to offer our employees and visitors lots of healthy options so they can make great healthy choices and make a difference in the way they live their lives,” Olivero stated.

 

Ashe Memorial Hospital will celebrate their new Red Apple Award with a naming contest for the little bee that helped shape their healthy food environment. The bee icon, developed by the wellness committee at Ashe Memorial, sports a chef’s hat and guides visitors and employees to the healthy options in their cafeteria and vending area. The wellness team uses the bee to educate consumers about eating healthy and living well. Their spring menu features several new fresh and delicious recipesthat meet the Red Apple Nutrition Criteria.
